REGIONAL AND URBAN PLANNING PROGRAMS (PL)

The College of Arts and Sciences offers an interdisciplinary, double-major program in regional and urban planning leading to the bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree. The objective of this program is to provide

planning skills for resolving specialized and comprehensive economic, social, political, and physical problems in urban and regional areas. The program's components include general education requirements; a single departmental major in economics, geography, or political science; and an interdisciplinary major composed of planning, management, and administration courses. Referrals for additional information on departmental advising and registration in the program are made through the Department of Geography, Box 870322, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0322.

Requirements for the double-major degree program. The requirements for the regional and urban planning double-major program are described below. A minimum of 12 hours at the 300 or 400 level in each major must be earned on this campus.

C. Departmental Major

A major in economics, geography, or political science is required. Major courses and ancillary requirements are specified by the department (see "Department of Economics," p. 80; "Department of Geography," p. 83; and "Department of Political Science," p. 105).

D. Electives

A list of courses recommended to support the regional and urban planning program is available in the geography department office for students who wish to take electives.

             Total: At least 128 hours

Requirements for the minor in regional and urban planning. The regional and urban planning minor consists of 21 hours. A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus. Geography majors are not eligible for the minor in regional and urban planning. Requirements in the minor are as follow:

Certificate program. The certificate program in regional and urban planning is an interdisciplinary curriculum providing concentration in either environmental management and planning or rural development and planning. The purpose of the program is to provide a supplementary qualification for students interested in careers in environmental and rural planning.

A student who successfully completes the program receives, in addition to the chosen degree, a certificate in one of the two planning concentrations. Any student in the College of Arts and Sciences may apply for admission to the certificate program through the Department of Geography program advisers.
