LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM (LAS)

The Latin American Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program focusing on Latin America. A student in the College of Arts and Sciences may major or minor in Latin American studies. The major is composed of 21 hours of core courses and 15 hours of electives. A student majoring in Latin American studies must also complete the minor (or its equivalent) in Spanish.

Courses in the field of Latin American studies are offered in anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology, law, and education. Credit may also be earned through the annual Interim term course in Yucatan, Mexico.

Required Latin American studies courses. The required courses for the Latin American studies major are ANT 413, EC 442, GY 245, HY 237, HY 238, LAS 396, and PSC 332. Additionally, more than 50 other courses on campus are Latin American-related and can be applied toward fulfilling the other requirements. A minimum of 12 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.

Requirements for the minor in Latin American studies. The minor is composed of 18 hours of coursework in Latin American content courses. The minor must include the Latin American studies seminar (LAS 396) and 3 hours in any other 300- or 400-level Latin American content course. A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.

1A maximum of 6 hours in any one department may be applied to the humanities, literature, and fine arts (HU, L, FA) and history and social and behavioral sciences (HI, SB) requirements.

2Six hours in courses designated W must be included in the junior or senior year. A minimum of 33 hours in 300- and 400-level courses must be completed, including 12 hours in the major and 6 hours in the minor.

3MATH course number is determined by placement. MATH 110 or higher is required.

Graduate programs. The Latin American Studies Program offers the master of arts in Latin American studies with major concentrations in anthropology, economics, history, political science, and Spanish. Certain other departments provide for a focus and/or thesis work on Latin American topics. Interested students should consult the director of the Latin American Studies Program.
