    Degree Requirements


General Requirements for All Arts and Sciences Curricula

A. RESIDENCE

While enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences on this campus, students must earn a minimum of 25 percent of the total number of semester hours required for the degree, including at least 9 of the last 18 hours. A minimum of 12 hours in each major and 6 hours in each minor must be earned at the 300 or 400 level in residence in the College.

B. HOURS AND GRADE POINT AVERAGE

  1. Each student must complete a minimum of 128 semester hours of coursework approved by the College of Arts and Sciences.
  2. Each student must earn a 2.0 grade point average on the total number of hours attempted. A transfer student must also earn a 2.0 GPA at The University of Alabama.
  3. Each student must earn a 2.0 grade point average in the major and minor fields of study. A transfer student must also earn a 2.0 GPA in the major and minor fields at The University of Alabama.

C. ADVANCED-LEVEL COURSE REQUIREMENT

Each student in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete a minimum of 33 semester hours in courses at the 300 or 400 level. The 33-hour total includes a minimum of 12 hours in residence in each major and a minimum of 6 hours in residence in each minor. Junior-college credits are not considered advanced level.

D. HOURS WITHIN THE DISCIPLINES OF THE COLLEGE

Students with majors and minors within the College of Arts and Sciences must earn at least 110 hours selected from A&S disciplines (courses with the following alpha symbols: AAST, AMS, ANT, ARB, ARH, ART, AS, ASST, AY, BSC, BUI, CH, CHI, CL, CD, CBH, CJ, CROA, CS, CZE, DN, DUT, EC, EN, FIN, FR, GS, GY, GEO, GN, GR, HEB, HIN, HY, HCM, HU, INDO, IT, JA, KOR, LA, LAS, MS, MATH, MDGR, MUA, MUS, NEW, NOR, PH, PHL, POL, POR, PSC, PY, PL, REL, RUS, SAN, SOC, SP, SS, ST, SWA, SWED, TH, THAI, TURK, UH, URDU, VIET, WS, WL).

This requirement is reduced to 98 hours for a student who (a) completes a College of Arts and Sciences-approved minor offered in another division of the University (see p.66); (b) completes a College of Arts and Sciences-approved second major in another division of the University (see p. 66); (c) completes the courses required for a teacher's Class B Secondary Professional Certificate (see p. 114); or (d) completes the courses required for an ROTC commission.

E. DEGREE CREDIT FOR COURSES IN MILITARY SCIENCE AND AIR FORCE STUDIES (MIL AND AFS)

  1. Each student may apply toward graduation a maximum of 4 semester hours in 100- and 200-level courses in military science (MIL) or Air Force studies (AFS).
  2. Each student may apply toward graduation a maximum of 12 semester hours credit in 300- and 400-level courses in military science (MIL) or Air Force studies (AFS).

F. DEGREE CREDIT FOR COURSES IN LEISURE ACTIVITIES AND ATHLETIC COACHING

Each student in the College of Arts and Sciences may apply toward graduation a maximum of 4 hours in physical education leisure activities and athletic coaching (HPL and HCA) courses.

G. DEGREE CREDIT FOR COURSES IN THE COLLEGE OF CONTINUING STUDIES

A student may earn a maximum of 25 percent of the work required for the degree from the Division of Independent Studies or in a combination of independent-study, off-campus, and Weekend College courses offered through the College of Continuing Studies. (Also see the exceptions below and the information under "Graduation" on p. 26.)

A transfer student from another institution may complete a maximum of 25 percent of the remaining work required for the degree, subject to the following provisions:

  1. There is no conflict with residency requirements.
  2. The total amount of work taken in independent-study, off-campus, Weekend College, and other such programs (at The University of Alabama and elsewhere) is not more than 25 percent of the total number of hours required for the degree.
  3. The student does the remainder of the work at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

All regulations of the College of Arts and Sciences governing prerequisites, degree requirements, etc., apply to students taking courses through the College of Continuing Studies. Enrollment in College of Continuing Studies courses requires prior approval of the registrar of the College of Arts and Sciences.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR

A. Major Subjects of Specialization

The following are the major subjects of specialization for the B.A. degree: American studies, anthropology, art history, Asian studies, classics, communicative disorders, criminal justice, dance, economics, English, French, geography, geology, German, history, interdisciplinary studies (New College and External Degree Program), international studies, Latin American studies, music, philosophy, political science, psychology, regional and urban planning, religious studies, Russian, Spanish, student-designed programs, studio art, and theatre.

The following are the major subjects of specialization for the B.S. degree: biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, geography, geology, health care management, interdisciplinary studies (New College and External Degree Program), marine science, mathematics, physics, psychology, regional and urban planning, and student-designed programs.

B. Hours in the Major

Students must complete the number of hours required for the major, in accordance with requirements stated in the catalog. A student may choose to take additional hours in the major, but the department cannot require more than the stated number. The maximum number of hours specified for the major exceeds 36 only with the recommendation of the Committee on Instruction and the approval of the dean.

C. Residency in the Major

All students, including transfer students, must complete in residence in the College a minimum of 12 hours at the 300 or 400 level.

D. Grade Point Average in the Major

Each student must earn a 2.0 grade point average on all work attempted in the major. A transfer student must also earn a 2.0 grade point average on all work attempted in the major on this campus.

E. Duplication of Coursework

There is no duplication of coursework used to complete the major and the minor.

F. Double Majors

A student may major in two subjects with the following provisions:

  1. All major requirements are fulfilled in both subjects, including ancillary requirements.
  2. One major may be selected from the majors offered in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, provided the student fulfills all general degree requirements of both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Communication and Information Sciences.
  3. If the two majors lead to different degrees offered in the College of Arts and Sciences (B.A., B.F.A., B.M., B.S., or one of the designated degrees), the student chooses which degree to receive.
  4. A minor is not required, but one minor may be specified. Double minors are not permitted in combination with double majors.
  5. There is no duplication of coursework used to complete the two major programs or the majors and minor.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR

A. Minor Subjects of Specialization

  1. Departmental minor. Students may minor in most areas in which majors are offered and in the following additional areas in the College of Arts and Sciences: African-American studies, astronomy, Chinese, computer-based honors, creative writing, East and Central European studies, fuels and mineral resources, geographic information systems, Italian, Japanese, Judaic studies, sociology, women's studies, and world literature.
  2. Minors in other divisions. Students in the College of Arts and Sciences may minor in specified areas in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, the College of Engineering; the College of Human Environmental Sciences, the College of Communication and Information Sciences, and the School of Social Work, subject to the limitations stated on p. 66.

B. Hours in the Minor

The student must complete the number of hours required for the minor in accordance with requirements stated in the catalog. A student may choose to take additional hours in the minor, but the department cannot require more than the stated number. The maximum number of hours specified for the minor exceeds 23 only with the recommendation of the Committee on Instruction and the approval of the dean.

C. Residency in the Minor

All students, including transfer students, must complete in residence in the College a minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level.

D. Grade Point Average in the Minor

Each student must earn a 2.0 grade point average on all work attempted in the minor. A transfer student must also earn a 2.0 grade point average on all work attempted in the minor on this campus.

E. Duplication of Coursework

There is no duplication of coursework used to complete the major and minor.

F. Double Minors

Students may minor in two subjects, with the following provisions:

  1. All minor requirements are met in both subjects.
  2. One minor may be selected from approved minors in other divisions. See "Approved Programs of Study in Other Divisions" below.
  3. There is no duplication of coursework used to complete the two minor programs or the major and minors.
  4. Double minors are not permitted in combination with double majors.
