ARMY RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS STUDIES
The Army ROTC program provides college men and women an opportunity to receive training in basic military skills. Through study and application of the principles of leadership and management, the ROTC student develops self-discipline, self-confidence, and other desirable qualities that will contribute to success in any career.
The program in military science may be completed through either a two-year or a four-year course of instruction. Upon graduation, students who successfully complete either program may be offered commissions as officers in the United States Army, the Army Reserve, or the National Guard. Courses offered by the University of Alabama Army ROTC department are fully accredited.
Most schools and colleges at the University accept all 24 hours of offered Army ROTC courses toward the fulfillment of degree requirements. The number of hours accepted as elective credit, however, may vary. In order to determine how much Army ROTC credit may be applied toward a degree, students should contact the appropriate college, school, or department.
Four-Year Program
The four-year program consists of the Basic Course and the Advanced Course. Each course normally requires four semesters to complete.
Basic Course
The Basic Course refers to the first- and second-year courses MIL 110, MIL 120, MIL 240, MIL 245, which are designed for beginning students who want to qualify for entry into the Advanced Course and for those students who may want to try Military Science without obligations. A number of popular or challenging extracurricular activities are associated with these courses. A student can also qualify for entry into the Advanced Course by completing Camp Challenge (MIL 250).
MIL 110 Introduction to Army ROTC. One hour.
MIL 120 Introduction to Leadership. One hour.
MIL 240 Self/Team Development. Two hours.
MIL 245 Individual/Team Military Tactics. Two hours.
Advanced Course
The Advanced Course consists of the courses MIL 350, MIL 360, MIL 470, and MIL 480. It is open only to students who have completed the Basic Course or the equivalent. The Advanced Course is designed to qualify a student for a commission as an officer in the United States Army. Students must complete all courses and a five-week Advanced Camp in the summer, usually between the junior and senior years. The courses must be taken in sequence unless otherwise approved by the professor of military science. Advanced ROTC students receive $150 per month while enrolled in ROTC.
College students who are completing the sophomore year and who have not taken any ROTC courses during the first two years and are not veterans can qualify for entrance in the ROTC Advanced Course by attending a five-week basic summer camp. Further inquiries about qualifications for the Advanced Course should be directed to the professor of military science, (205) 348-5917. The Advanced Course consists of the following courses:
MIL 350 Leading Small Organizations I. Three hours.
MIL 360 Leading Small Organizations II. Three hours.
MIL 470 Leadership Challenges and Goal-Setting. Three hours.
Army ROTC Scholarship Program
Army ROTC offers educational assistance through its four-year, three-year, and two-year scholarship programs. Scholarships cover tuition, laboratory and student fees, $450 per year to purchase books, and $150 per month in a subsistence allowance. Army ROTC scholarships are awarded competitively. The four-year awards are made to high-school seniors; students should apply before November of the final year of high school. Applications are available from high-school guidance counselors, on the Internet at www.tradoc.army.mil/rotc/4yrsch.html, or by calling 1-800-USA-ROTC. The three- and two-year awards are made available annually to University of Alabama students who have two or three years of study toward the bachelor's degree remaining (two years for graduate students) and who meet academic, physical, and age requirements.
Students interested in any of the awards should contact The University of Alabama, Professor of Military Science, Box 870260, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0260; (205) 348-5917.
Uniforms and Equipment
All students who are authorized to receive uniforms and equipment must make a $25 deposit with the University bursar. Once a deposit is made with the University bursar, the Army ROTC supply office will issue uniforms and equipment. Upon completion of enrollment or upon a student's withdrawal, the uniforms and equipment must be returned to Army ROTC within 72 hours. The full deposit will be returned to students who complete the course and return all assigned uniforms and equipment. Military science texts are furnished to all ROTC students without charge.
