STUDENT RECORDS AND GENERAL ACADEMIC POLICIES

FORGIVENESS POLICY

A student enrolled in an undergraduate program at The University of Alabama may drop from the computation of his or her grade point average (GPA) a maximum of three courses taken at the University. Courses not computed in the GPA cannot be applied toward baccalaureate degree requirements. These courses and the grades earned remain on the transcript with the notation that they are excluded from earned hours and the GPA. Once a course is dropped from the GPA computation under this policy, the grade and credit cannot be restored.

A student who plans to be a degree candidate must submit his or her application for forgiveness no later than the deadline for filing the degree application for graduation. Colleges may specify courses that cannot be dropped from the GPA computation. This policy cannot be used to drop courses that were applied toward a previously awarded baccalaureate degree or to drop courses in which penalty grades were assigned as a result of academic misconduct.

Each student should read the policy carefully and seek help from his or her divisional headquarters, academic adviser, or from the Office of Academic Records and University Registrar to determine if use of the forgiveness policy is appropriate to his or her degree program.

Each academic division has established procedures for students to initiate this policy; contact the appropriate dean's office for information.
