College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

CLEP General Examination. Students may, prior to or during the first term of enrollment, obtain academic credit by examination. A score of 520 is required on the CLEP General Examinations. Six semester hours of credit may be awarded in each of four general areas: humanities, mathematics¹, natural sciences, and social sciences/history. The Department of English does not award CLEP credit. All credit is elective credit, with the exception of mathematics, which for Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration students satisfies the MATH 112 requirement and 3 hours of elective credit. A maximum of 24 hours of elective credit is allowed for students enrolled in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration. A maximum of 24 hours (18 hours in the College of Engineering) can be granted under the CLEP General Examination Program.²

CLEP scores must be available before the beginning of the semester in which the student wants them to be applied. A student may not have been enrolled in a comparable course for more than 30 days. In certain instances, a student may be permitted to take one or more of the examinations after an initial semester of enrollment in college. Applicability toward a degree is determined by the school or college in which the student is registered.

CLEP Subject Examinations. All divisions of the University may grant credit for CLEP Subject Examinations (minimum score of 52) in lieu of enrollment in an equivalent course, provided that such credit is applicable to the degree program in which the student is enrolled. Students may take CLEP Subject Examinations at any time during their college careers, provided they have not been enrolled in the equivalent courses for more than 30 days. Credit may not be received for both the subject examination and its equivalent (either another examination or a course taken for credit). Approved subject examinations and their University of Alabama equivalents appear in the table on p. 19.

²Students enrolled in New College should check with the New College registrar for CLEP requirements. Students enrolled in the Capstone College of Nursing should check with that college for CLEP requirements.

The University recognizes the CLEP general and subject examinations taken at any national CLEP test center. Examinations are administered monthly at Testing and Data Management Services, 205 Student Services Center; (205) 348-6760.
